Discover the rich birdlife and scenic landscapes of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park on this 2-day birdwatching hike from Gurje to Kakani. Explore pristine oak, rhododendron, pine, and alder forests while searching for a variety of Himalayan bird species, including pheasants, laughingthrushes, barbets, woodpeckers, and raptors. Combined with breathtaking Himalayan views and expert-guided birding, this short trek offers an unforgettable nature experience just outside Kathmandu.

Trip Itinerary

After an early breakfast, drive to Gurje, the starting point of today's trek. From here, enter Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park and begin a rewarding hike through pristine oak, rhododendron, and mixed broadleaf forests. The trail gradually ascends along peaceful forest paths, offering spectacular panoramic views of the Himalayan range on clear days. The lush forest, dotted with towering ferns and diverse vegetation, provides excellent habitat for many Himalayan bird species. Possible sightings include Hill Partridge, Golden-throated Barbet, Striated Laughingthrush, Fire-breasted Flowerpecker, and Greater Yellownape. After approximately 5–6 hours of trekking, arrive at Kakani, a scenic hill station known for its mountain views and rich birdlife. Overnight at a local lodge.
After an early breakfast, spend the morning exploring two of Kakani's best birdwatching sites, walking through beautiful pine and alder forests that support a wide variety of Himalayan birds. The peaceful woodland trails provide excellent opportunities for birdwatching and nature photography. Possible sightings include Black-throated Sunbird, Kalij Pheasant, Crested Serpent Eagle, and Streak-throated Babbler, along with many other forest species. After lunch, drive back to Kathmandu, concluding your short Himalayan birding adventure.
